Cognitive modeling with conceptual spaces
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents a formal approach to cognitive modeling by utilizing conceptual spaces. Conceptual spaces were introduced by Peter Gärdenfors as geometric and topologic representations that mediate between the symbolic and subconceptual cognitive levels. They can be used for knowledge representation and to explain cognitive reasoning. The goal here is to discuss both the advantages of this approach, and limitations regarding its potential as a ‘universal’ form of cognitive representation that also serves as a representational model for human spatial reasoning.

Conceptual Ternary Diagrams for Shape Perception: A Preliminary Step
This work-in-progress provides a preliminary cognitive investigation of how the external visualization of the ‘Ternary diagram’ (TD) might be used as an underlying model for exploring the representation of simple 3D cuboids according to the theory of Conceptual Spaces. Gärdenfors introduced geometrical entities, known as conceptual spaces, for modeling concepts. He considered multidimensional s...
متن کاملTypicality-Based Inference by Plugging Conceptual Spaces Into Ontologies
In this paper we present a cognitively inspired system for the representation of conceptual information in an ontology-based environment. It builds on the heterogeneous notion of concepts in Cognitive Science and on the so-called dual process theories of reasoning and rationality, and it provides a twofold view on the same artificial concept, combining a classical symbolic component (grounded o...

A theory of concepts is being developed as part of the new synthesis in cognitive science accomplished...
متن کاملConceptual Integration Networks
Conceptual integration—"blending"—is a general cognitive operation on a par with analogy, recursion, mental modeling, conceptual categorization, and framing. It serves a variety of cognitive purposes. It is dynamic, supple, and active in the moment of thinking. It yields products that frequently become entrenched in conceptual structure and grammar, and it often performs new work on its previou...
متن کاملConceptual Spaces as a Framework for Knowledge Representation
The dominating models of information processes have been based on symbolic representations of information and knowledge. During the last decades, a variety of non-symbolic models have been proposed as superior. The prime examples of models within the non-symbolic approach are neural networks. However, to a large extent they lack a higher-level theory of representation. In this paper, conceptual...
